Künzell & the Florenberg

Set off on foot from the front door

Right next to the house stands the fortified church, whose history goes back to the year 915. Several circular walks start from here, clearly waymarked with the numbers 1 to 5. You will find all the routes on the large map in the display case on the hill.

Baroque Fulda

Fulda: cathedral, palace and summer musicals

In ten minutes you are in the centre of Fulda. The baroque cathedral with the tomb of St Boniface, the Carolingian St Michael's Church, the prince-abbots' city palace with its palace garden and orangery: the baroque quarter is a delight to explore on foot. You will also find the tourist information office on Bonifatiusplatz, beside the statue of the city's patron saint.

In summer Fulda becomes a city of musicals: every year the Musicalsommer by Spotlight Musicals brings major productions to the stage. During Advent, the Christmas market around the cathedral is a draw. Afterwards you simply drive back up the hill instead of hunting for a parking space in town.

With children: At the Kinder-Akademie Fulda, a hands-on museum with interactive areas and workshops, touching is positively encouraged.

Just outside town lies Schloss Fasanerie in Eichenzell, the prince-abbots' baroque summer palace, ideal for a stroll through the park.

Rhön Biosphere Reserve

The Rhön: the land of wide horizons

Wasserkuppe: At 950 metres, the highest mountain in Hesse and the birthplace of gliding. At the top you will find the German Gliding Museum, the airfield, the paragliders' launch meadow and the Radom, the old radar dome with its viewing platform. Families head for Wiegand's ski and toboggan arena: summer toboggan runs and a climbing park in summer, ski lifts and sledging slopes in winter. Wiegand Erlebnisberg →

Milseburg: The striking basalt peak with a chapel at the summit. The view stretches far across the Kuppenrhön. From the Florenberg you can see the Milseburg and the Wasserkuppe every morning at sunrise.

Rotes Moor and Schwarzes Moor: Two of the Rhön's raised bogs, crossed by boardwalks and each with an observation tower. The Rotes Moor lies on the Hessian side, the Schwarzes Moor on the Bavarian side near Fladungen. Especially beautiful in autumn and on misty mornings.

Kreuzberg: The “holy mountain of Franconia”, with its Franciscan monastery and monastery brewery – a classic for walkers.

Fränkisches Freilandmuseum Fladungen: Half-timbered houses, cottage gardens and old craft workshops from the Rhön, rebuilt to form an entire village. A lovely day out for the whole family. Opening times & admission →

Rhön Dark Sky Reserve: Because the Rhön is so dark at night, you can see the Milky Way here with the naked eye. Rhön Dark Sky Reserve →

Walking, cycling, winter

Out and about in every season

Walking: As well as our circular walks on the hill, the Hochrhöner premium trail and the Extratouren lead you to the loveliest corners of the Rhön. Rhön Biosphere Reserve →

Cycling: The Milseburgradweg runs for around 27 kilometres along an old railway line from Petersberg-Götzenhof to the Ulster valley, with gradients of no more than three per cent and through the 1,172-metre Milseburg tunnel (open roughly mid-April to the end of October). The Fulda cycle route also passes through Fulda. Milseburgradweg →

Winter: When there's snow, the Wasserkuppe is the place for sledging, skiing and cross-country trails.

Leonora's favourite places

The meadow towards Edelzell: My favourite spot on the hill. From here I look out over Fulda into the sunset.

The little town of Schlitz: My tip for an afternoon nearby. Narrow winding lanes, half-timbered houses around the market square with its fountain, and above it all the medieval Hinterturm tower. Simply lovely for a wander.

Fulda's palace garden in summer: After a shopping trip in town, on hot days I like to slip into the palace garden. The old trees give shade, and in front of the orangery you can really breathe.

The Fuldaaue with children: Meadows, playgrounds and gravel banks right by the river, in the middle of Fulda and completely free. Skimming stones, paddling barefoot in the riverbed: an afternoon simply flies by.

The Kaskadenschlucht gorge near Gersfeld: My go-to place to cool off on hot summer days. In the shady valley the stream babbles over stones and fallen tree trunks, the children climb and balance, and the grown-ups enjoy the cool air.
